Pretty intense indeed.

Huge hail, lightning as severe storms hit SA
Monday September 21, 2009 - 11:04 EST

Huge hailstones and lightning have been reported as severe storms move across South Australia.

A fierce storm has damaged property at Elliston on western Eyre Peninsula as it hit the town just before 9:00am ACST.

Andrea Taylor at the local caravan park said the storm dumped hailstones up to three centimetres in diameter.

"There's some dents on bonnets, roofs, sunroofs are damaged," she said.

"I've rung up the council and they've got damage done to their cars.

"It was a quite ferocious little storm. There was rain after the white stuff and a massive thunderstorm. I saw lightning strike one of the trees in the park."

The weather bureau has issued storm and gale warnings as the severe weather passes across the state.

Here is the current STW.

TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING
for LARGE HAILSTONES, DESTRUCTIVE WIND and FLASH FLOODING
For people in the Lower Eyre Peninsula, Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, Flinders, Mid North, Riverland and parts of the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges, West Coast, Murraylands, Northwest Pastoral and Northeast Pastoral districts.

Issued at 10:37 am Monday, 21 September 2009.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce large hailstones, destructive winds, very heavy rainfall and flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Adelaide, Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Maitland, Kadina, Clare and Port Pirie.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Secure or put away loose items around your property.
* Move cars under cover or away from trees.
* Keep clear of fallen power lines.
* Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* Stay indoors, away from windows, while storms are nearby.

The next warning is due to be issued by 1:40 pm.

If severe thunderstorms develop in the Adelaide Region, a more detailed Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued to people in this area.

Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call

Bloody oath.... Awesome, but very dangerous storms. I think the BoM better put on the 'tornado' watch button in there severe storm warnings. They have the option to do it, I saw it at work experience. Those storms are capable. Very cool.... I am so excited just looking at them..... Very Happy

Odds-on that the black core cell will be spawning water spouts at the very least. On track to smack CBD during their lunch hour.

Cannot believe that BOM have not updated the STW to include the cell as severe.

Currently searching for a good webcam around Glenelg facing west!!

This a view from outer harbour. http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/data/outer/index.htm

Unfortunately not seeing the big storm but may see some action as that embedded storm band comes across.

Adelaide baro dropping like a stone. Down 10 hPa in the last 4hrs.
Secondary line looking very sharp and growing as of moves past the Adelaide area. The third line appears to be headingdown thru Kangaroo Island. However if you look at the 4th band, that should Adelaide and surrounds nicely come 3pm.

Edit: If you check the lightning tracker. That 4th band is producing a huge amount of lightning. The timing will be perfect!!

Very much like the weather SE QLD gets at springtime. I think these storms will make it into W VIC later not just the NW.

I tend to agree Karl. The form low pressure system will drag a heap of that activity further south than its current trajectory. The initial line of storms has split (at least of the tracker), with SW NSW in line for a rumble. Mildura and Mallee areas may miss out (unless that band on Mildura radar is being underestimated!!).

I dare say that they may be within viewing distance in Melbourne from 10pm tonight. But more of that in the other thread.

Thats what I think too. I make my own thunderstorm maps here at home for fun (sounds whacko, but hey...) and I show that in them.

What a day for SA. Unreal storms all morning and now a pretty significant rain band with embedded storms. A taste of things to come?

I'm glad you saved that image, that storm on the eastern riverlands looks very severe with destructive winds there.
