Re: Victoria: Significant Cold Outbreak - September 25th-29th 2009
They have eased off a bit, but more intense than the radar suggests, I think because they are so low. wind has increased too.
Did the dig test down the park, the soil isnt the best at absorbing moisture, but I was expecting the rain to penetrate more than the inch it has. beach has vanished, waves up to and through the fenceline.

Re: Victoria: Significant Cold Outbreak - September 25th-29th 2009
looking at the radar all morning and it seems to be funeling all the showers over the SE burbs - it's almost as if there is an imaginary line north west of the city and nothing is falling on that side of the line, looking good for the catchments with Mt Baw Baw showing great totals in the past week and the top total for today so far at 10mm
Re: Victoria: Significant Cold Outbreak - September 25th-29th 2009
Not much rain here, but some really gusty showers. They've got more of a punch then yesterday in terms of wind.

Re: Victoria: Significant Cold Outbreak - September 25th-29th 2009
Yeah windy conditions in showers this afternoon. 9.6mm here to 9am.
Re: Victoria: Significant Cold Outbreak - September 25th-29th 2009
Starting to tend more towards drizzle up here - 10mm since 6am so is still is adding up. The air is a lot warmer to our south and this is starting to get wrap around in the SW'lies (over Tassie) and LAPS suggests this will continue and also the low level humidity will increase. The set up is very similar to that 2 weeks ago which dumped for 24 hours over parts of the Yarra Valley/Dandenongs so could get plenty more yet...
Just back from a dash up Mt Saint Leonard. Was OK snow lying to about 900m but melting quickly. Snowed on and off while we were there. Good flows in the creeks but nothing that remarkable - just looked like a normal winter scene.

Re: Victoria: Significant Cold Outbreak - September 25th-29th 2009
Well, I'm over this now. Ended up with 29.1mm from the low but only around 1.5mm of that after the initial rain on Friday and overnight into Saturday.
Nothing wrong with the final total, very happy with it actually and managed to crack the 50mm mark for the week which is what I was hoping for. The one big fizzer though was snowfall, it was just your standard scenario in the end with the tap turned off as soon as the winds went from NW to west so other than the odd reported snow flurry nothing on the west central ranges at all. Disappointed that I missed out on anything decent from the trough line yesterday which showed a lot of promise but really failed to deliver much for many of us in the end.
Today was a shocker. Mostly overcast, just a few very brief sunny patches later this afternoon, generally windy and 7.9C for a max with the temp between 6C and 7C for most of the day. A few drizzly showers at times. The wind chill is really quite bad today also making it a day for staying indoors despite the lack of rain. Drove up to the top of the mountain today and encountered some fairly light horizontal sleet with the odd flurry of very small snowflakes. Wind was really gusting up there shaking the car around quite a lot.
Anyway as I said I'm over it now (the current system not the general pattern) and like a few others am looking forward to the warm days this week before the next promising system mid to late week, looks like another good one (although back to SW flow towards the weekend). Very nice week ahead for Melbourne, should get towards mid 20s Wednesday and Thursday ahead of more rain and possible storms late Thursday or Friday.

Just got home from a week away and found 53mm in the guage, so we got somewhere between Longerenong 48mm and Horsham AP 65mm.
We saw some of the best looking crops on the way to Albury and back the week later. I think there will be a lot of happy farmers around this year

Re: Victoria: Significant Cold Outbreak - September 25th-29th 2009
Back from Lake Eildon. A ripping weekend watching the rain come down. All in all 57mm since Friday. Thanks Karl for posting my obs. Friday was a brilliant day, yesterday got bitterly cold, had 4 hail showers but no thunder.
We moved the boats this morning, lake rose 50cm overnight!! Some really good inflows, however the Goulburn downstream from the lake is low given minimal releases. Speaking to some locals, they said this weekend was the best spring rain for 10-15 years. They mentioned it was almost back to "normal", if you know what I mean.
Paddocks on the way back today all lush. Fire affected areas mainly between Buxton Narbethong very boggy. Acheron/Rubicon/Stevenson rivers flowing swifly. Was raining all the way home, so didn't stop for pics. No flooding noticed, but plenty of water in paddocks. One thing I did notice around the fire affected areas and the Black Spur, were increasing numbers of trees coming down due to the sodden ground and strong winds. Drive thru the spur this arvo was also cool, vis down to 100m due to low cloud/fog/mist.

Hello from Vienna, Austria!! Sounds like the weather is quite interesting down in Australia! That doesn't surprise me, I knew as soon as I left it would go crazy! Glad to hear the rain is going in the right places, hope there is more to come!

hows Mt Baw Baw - top rainfall in the state - again - currently on 30mm for the day and looking at the radar still more to come - awsome for the thompson catchment i suppose!

Well, its been raining all day, the flats near Leongatha are in full flood I havent seen that for quite a few years. We have had 70mm in the gauge up until 3.30pm and it has continued to rain solidly since then. The better half has been out all day getting trees of roads and one car in the area. Been an unbelievable event so far

Haha Sniper! I'm glad I didn't go during the week as they only had 22.8mm where as I had 57mm! I had a feeling they wouldn't fair so well despite the early analysis. I should have gone this morning though, they are up to 21mm already today and are catching up fast (43.8mm). GFS is forecasting some decent falls for there too, would have been a perfect week weather-wise if I went today! Radar looks nice too.
Seems the eastern suburbs are doing quite well, radar doesn't show it but I've had reports it's been raining all day in Scoresby. Dams are doing okay too.

7mm here since 9am, it's rained/drizzled almost all day with only small breaks between showers. Still very, very cold and the wind brrr! It's days like this I wish we still had our open fire, you could actually stand in front of something and get warm. Ducted heating just doesn't cut it in this weather.

62.5mm in my gauge at Mt Macedon this week. very happy with that. an absolutely freezing couple of days, zero this morning. 4.8C max.
Yesterday, a 5C max but only for a second or two.Was mostly around 3C and very frequent snow flurries, was a good way to farewell winter and welcome spring on the Mount.
It's absolutley wonderfull to read all the rainfall amounts in this thread. Long may it rain over us!

Re: Victoria: Significant Cold Outbreak - September 25th-29th 2009
Is it pouring down your way Lily? It is pouring here, has been the last 45 minutes, gutters flowing nicely. Ahhhhh the soaking rain to end the sequence is here. Should go all night and most of tomorrow morning before lifting to partly cloudy by lunchtime. Hoping to squeeze another 5-10mm overnight out of it.
Hit 9mm here since 9am and rising steadily now.
The swamp has returned in the backyard.
130mm here in about 10 days and climbing.

Hi Karl, we don't seem to be getting much here at the moment, has been very steady all day though, drizzle to light mainly...
Good to hear you are getting a lot down there, is the radar underestimating?
