I'm getting directly hit by the cell next to melbourne airport. 4 rumbles of thunder. I've seen lightning and there's hail that's around 5 cent coin size.

Sydenham/St Albans area getting smashed going by radar. Intense self sustaining cell with hail. Certainly some decent totals likely with that if it doesn't move on in a hurry.

I'm in that cell. There's been 4 more lightning strikes.

Quite a big storm here in the last 30mins, some loud thunder and small hail as well, had about 7mm's of rain temp dropped from over 20c to just 13c now.

That is an ominous cell that St Albans one...it is moving at roughly 20kph so a lot of rain in it potentially.

Lilydale may get hit in a min...looks like a cell just west of us moving in easterly direction...quite dark

As expected isolated thunderstorms developing over the eastern half currently. Lots of heating left in the day too, some western parts still have the risk IMO. Keeping an eye out, the convection has grown slowly but sufficiently here in the past couple of hours.

Corowa/Rutherglen area looks to have the pick of the storms of the day so far, also very active through East Gippsland coming off the ranges.

Very quiet here with nothing happening at all to the W/NW just ragged Cu, gives me the impression that these storms will stay where they are for the rest of today. From my vantage point the best development is clearly to the S and E.

That Melb AP cell is still looking pretty significant and slow moving...will it increase as it enters eastern subs?

Clouds have gone from moving in an E/SE direction to an E/NE direction and very slowly. Could be signs of a weak wind change/ sea breeze type change. Convection has also increased locally but also looking a little less threatening than earlier this afternoon.

I'm right next door to those area's & had a clear view of those cells while I was outside gardening. Had serveral rolls of thunder here but nothing else. Seemed to be right on the edge of them.

Yeah it definitely isn't as warm now...I think it will peter out unfortunately...I guess it just depends how warm, humid and unstable the air mass is.

Victoria: Wintry fronts with Showers or rain. Oct 12th to 17th

Post  tizza on Sun Oct 11, 2009 1:17 pm

nice shower has been going in Richmond for a while but it just needed a bit more umph and it would have been a ripping storm. All rain is good rain! It's just a shame the cell couldn't quite get organised enough to really get going. Temp has dropped quite a bit too.

Just got back from Hamilton in the states SW where we were helping family move from Coleraine. The country out there is looking absoultely spectacular! Wild flowers in full bloom, grass is the best in 30 years according to my Farther in Law who has been on a sheep farm down there all his life (he's 80ish now). The conola crops are amzing, I have never seen them so wide spread or brightly yellow. Made for some amazing scenes on the drive home. But would you believe forgot the camera Sad

Drove back and took the Skipton to Bannockburn root, the country is certainly a bit drier between Skipton and Geelong, but still dams are 3/4 full generally that I could see from the road. The dams around Hamilton are brimming, and water lying in every available ditch, even on the high ground. Not bad considering it hasn't rained much in the last week.

Struck the cell around the NW burbs as we were coming in from Geelong. Not much to look at, but got a bit wet from around the Western Ring road, until we reached the Toorak Rd. turn off after the tunnel.

Nothing here yet, but dark to the N, however looks like it will miss us clean.

Week coming still seems to be holding which is good to see. No internet over the weekend, so haven't been able to follow the updates.

Cleared right up here, all moved out east late afternoon as predicted. Nice little bonus for a few locations, always good to see.

Anyway on to the 'main event' now. Might be a bit slow to get going but by tomorrow afternoon/evening looks like some good falls becoming general and then Tuesday looks even better. Don't think we'll see much ahead of the front but it should be through overnight and into the early morning with the rain.

EDIT: It certainly is a green state atm. Grass is growing at a very rapid rate here with some very long grass starting to grow in paddocks. Certainly reminds me more of the 80's and 90's. In 2006 there was no grass in the paddocks at all, literally all dirt with a fine layer of stubble and that was here on the ranges not just the drier parts of the state. Absolutely fantastic to see this and hear reports of the same all over the state. The garden is actually healthy too with vigorous growth starting early, we have had big problems in recent years with the concept of having a European style garden almost becoming unviable even on the hills and ranges. A lot had to be ripped out because it was doing so poorly. Massive turn around this year.

what an interesting afternoon. I was visiting my parent's today in Sunshine and we seemed to be hit by almost everything, rain and thunder for quite a while. My brother also reported seeing hail, but I didn't. Not sure if we got anything here in Caroline Springs though.

But it is back to warm sunny weather here for the time being.

Interesting reports from people today Wink

I think tonight with the trough advancing towards Victoria, the Wimmera and Western districts will see isolated thunderstorms and showers develop, increasing after midnight.

Hey VR STORM.. Welcome to the forum!!!

Looking like a very useful system with about 5-6 fronts likely over the period wrapping around a strong southern ocean low which will develop a new centre in Bass Strait.

Expecting a fairly minor system tomorrow. Already peaking over eastern Bight waters now. I think patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms movng in over coming hours with 5-10mm about the west but up to 5mm through remaining areas. Better falls coming Tuesday.

Mid week looks good. Tuesday/Thursday and Saturday/Sunday look quite wet with frequent showers and cold air helping form coldies.

Rain totals look good for 20-40mm through Melbourne with up to 70-100mm over the hills and catchments. I expect 30-50mm here possibly more.

0.5mm here with a small storm grazing the town, no doubt attracted to Paynesville (Gippslands storm magnet) by the multiple aluminium tubular mechanism that Proteus assembles up in his eiryie above the yacht club for such occasions.
