Karl Lijnders wrote:Jason did you see the pulsating CG that turned the sky green for about 5 seconds after the bolt hit the power grid in the Noble Park region?? So bizarre, never seen anything like it!! Was the biggest CG of the night here!
I saw that Karl, I was in FT Gully last night, that was amazing!!! I was wondering if it was a large hail storm...and was trying to pinpoint where it was (I initially thought Springvale area)...
Didn't have internet last night, but wasn't it great! Lightning everywhere, I headed up to Mt Dandenong for about 40 minutes at around 10.30-11.15...was an absolutely brilliant view of it all...
I am hoping for more today, and I don't think it matters that we have no clouds yet, perfect for later if they roll in because it will trap all the heat and the humidity will sky rocket.
I went to Glen Waverley for dinner at around 8pm and the sky looked marvellous and the air was very moist. I had a sense that something was up. It is so hard to predict these type of storms down here because they have been so rare of late that I don't think we have much to compare to!!

Madmel wrote:Have experienced the good ol greenage in the thunderstorms, happened to me about 4 years ago when it hit something pretty darn close to home and I have never hit the deck so fast in my life!!! The thunderclap was deafening and something I dont excatly want to experience to a close call nature again LOL.
Was warming up fast this morning, cleaned the evap and then the seabreeze started kicking in so I dont think I see a 30.C day today unless the northerlies win in later. Plants in teh back yard look like they have had a orgasmic experience last night LOL havent seen the backyard look so green and uplifted!
Hey Mel, Lightning releases Nitrogen particles into the atmosphere which is then taken in from the plants/trees through the leaves from the atmosphere. Nitrogen is what keeps plants/shrubs/trees green and healthy and gives it the kick along for growth, so you will notice in an eletrical thunderstorm that suddenly trees and plants look green again or have that extra green to it even if you get little rain from it

Well our area is nearly lime green today...looks stunning!!
Can see convection over the NE ranges and subsequent rainfall well out east. Not shocked that the east fires first. These storms will travel NE.
Storms over central areas should explode in the next 2-3hrs, similar to the far western areas yesterday.

Yes I can see convection in the Marysville area at the moment.
It is very hot and humid outside and the cloud is starting to gather, although in no particular formation around here as yet.
There are much better dynamics today for very high rain fall totals ie December 2007 flood-type dynamics.
I think KL has called it once again as well, with echoes seemingly developing all over the Melbourne Metro area...

Re: Victoria: Thunderstorm Outbreak. October 28th-November 3rd 2009
Wow amazing photos Windy Rob. Interesting night, 14mm here which came in about 10-15 minutes so heavy rain. It's interesting everyone is talking about it like it was one of the best storms in years. For me I have to admit the duration, consistency and the brightness of the lightning was intense but I only saw 2 CG's and heard no thunder. I reckon having no thunder took away the intensity of the storms. I guess all the good stuff was in the storms slipping south. I wish it held further north. I see John you felt a bit the same.
Funny though, this girl I know hates storms and I told her there would be storms yesterday. An isolated storm popped over her area in the afternoon then the storms last night; I got the fringe of them and they just intensified over her area. She sustained some property damage too. Haha, ironic I thought.
31C already, it's a hot one.

I have to admit that the storms last night were nothing spectacular here in regards to thunder, whilst there was a lot of it - it sounded very far away and not very loud

Hands down out here one of the best storms in the past 5 years. This is why I don't live in the western suburbs. My brother who lives in Taylors Lakes said to me - what storm??
32C here now....it has that feel!!!

It definitely does! I am much more excited this time today than I was at this time yesterday
There is a ton more energy around today for the storms to suck up once they get going.\
By the way, there is a considerable seabreeze affect on southern coastal towns...will this hinder the ability for storms to develop down there?

No ILS, I think looking from my observations there were mid level AccAs as far down to Bass Strait.
Have taken a picture of convection exploding in the middle layers to my south. Good representation of what is to come.
Looks like another late storm buildup. Maybe now 3-5pm.

Don't quite understand that statement Karl. The western suburbs get their fair share of awesome storms. The setup didn't favour western suburbs and west central areas overnight. It happens. There are other occasions when all the activity is west of Melbourne and eastern suburbs get nothing. Sure oveer the course of a year the western suburbs are dry but in terms of thunderstorms it's actually an area that does really well.
Nothing at all happening here still. Not a cloud in the sky.

unofficially I have 33.9 degrees here. I say unofficialy because I only have a simple digital weather station which may not be situated in the best place, i.e in the shade under a carport, facing south. I tend to do my own personal adjustments and so it may be 32.9 rather than 33.9. Still nice!

It is good to see you are getting excited Johnno...I am guessing the white on the radar are the towers north of Laverton as well. Hopefully we can get to 35.

That csweather.net station is showing 33.8 atm so that sounds about right. It definately feels alot warmer here after going through Doreen and Epping.

Big mushroom popping it's head out over the ranges near Warburton...
It is looking very well structured as well with a smooth shear.
