It may not be one of the nicest topics, but it certainly has my attention as I love aviation nearly as much as meteorology. If things don't work out for me to become a MET being a pilot is always one of my goals, for an airline preferably, but it would be a great hobby as well. Both my grandparents used to fly aircraft, but none of the generation below them do, so I want to start it up again.

Anyway, I thought I would open this thread up for any incidents that arise in the aviation industry, like accidents, problems appearing, or your general thoughts on flights you have had or the aviation industry in general.

the thing with this topic is sometimes, when things go wrong, it may be weather related.

By the way Jake, or anyome else, did they ever find the black box of the Air France flight?

Yeah that's right Tony, it could be weather-related at times.

Unfortunately the AF447 (Air France 447) flight's black box's have not yet been recovered and may never be. The ping that they two black box's send out to help searchers locate the box's is fading and will soon die. Two ships involved in the search have now aborted though a submarine still is looking. We may never know exactly what has happened.

Good idea Jake. You show such commitment that I'm sure you will attain your goals whether it be one or the other or both Smile I have been in the cockpit a few times and once I was allowed to stay for a landing. I was securely strapped in for this and watched in awe as we landed in Singapore. You know after this experience I have never worried about landing as seeing it all in front of you it seems so effortless to just glide in and land. Will never forget it.

Did you see that program a few weeks back on the designing and building of the airbus? It was amazing to see how they perservered with the wing design and studied an eagles wing and how the feathers at the end would curve up which finally gave them the info they needed.

I think this topic is very weather related like Tony alluded to especially with the reports lately of air turbulence and lightning strikes re planes. When I went to Canada in April we ran into some bad air turbulence on the airbus we were on. The pilot said that this had been happening a bit lately and they didn't know why. Two days later the same flight ran into really bad air turbulence and the plane had to make an emergency landing to drop off injured passengers. It's a worry.

That's no good about the black box, would have probably provided answers

Thanks Rivergirl. Wink It's always been a goal.

I have never had the chance to be in the cockpit of a large airliner aircraft, though I think that is illegal now on most airline companies. But, my grandpa has a friend who flies with a particular airliner and he has also said they have noticed an increase in clear-air turbulence, it's a scary thought considering there is no way that I know of, to track it, unlike other turbulence which can be identified in clouds/storms.
