Re: Tsunami warning for Tasman Sea earthquake
Report of initial 7.2 undersea quake off sth island of NZ on radio at 7.30 our time.
A Tsunami warning for people living on the east coastof Australia to move 1k inland. Sounds serious, but Im watching the Tv as well and seen nothing, so I guess a lot of oyu will be swamped soon. Bye bye, can I have your land?
Given the bushfires, it seems nothing has been changed. Do we have an official Govenment tsunami warning?
I doubt it will make it to here, But what about Newcastle?
Off to bed to listen to the ABC, they will let me know if I have to don the life vest.
EDIT SBS reports 7.8 off s/w of NZ. NZ Tsunami watch cancelled false alarm.

Re: Tsunami warning for Tasman Sea earthquake
Interesting that 7.8 is the same as the strongest recorded earthquake in NZ so it is a big one...
From - www.gns.cri.nz/what/earthact/earthquakes/earthquakefaq.html"The biggest New Zealand earthquake since instrumental recording began was the 1931 magnitude 7.8 Hawke's Bay earthquake."

Can I just say that watching the news and the reaction to the warnings down in Gippsland last night, I can say that people are not taking the chance of one of these very seriously... Hmmmmm

Re: Tsunami warning for Tasman Sea earthquake
I am not totally sure Tony, but probably around 30cm I heard. Not very big, but it was still a tsunami!
Yeah I agree Karl, not many people took the warnings literally, one day there will be a big one, and no-one will take any notice to warnings unless they are physically evacuated. It was a good warning for the earthquake.

Re: Tsunami warning for Tasman Sea earthquake
Saw a video (actually a news story on SBS news) of another time a tsunami warning was issued, was the middle of the day (didn't quite catch on to what year) life savers at Coogee beach in Sydney announced to the beachgoers that an earthquake had occured off the Solomon Islands and that there was a Tsunami warning for the east coast, not one person even moved! Hate for the day something actually happens and then people say no one was warned!!

The same area of New Zealand have had another 3 quakes today including a 5.9. So the area is still very unstable...
