And now a lovely, big rolling clap of thunder coming back to me from Mt Dande Smile

Cleared up here, just a bit of drizzle & there's a bit of blue sky heading towards me now. Shortlived but fun all the same Smile

Well as fun as that was, it was extremely short lived, blue sky coming over again now. Just gearing up for when the next wave comes through *crosses fingers*. Fair amount of rain dumped in that short time. Wish i had a gage here.

Had another band move through extremely fast. Heavy hard fall with some hail in there for a bit, but moved on within about 5 minutes.

In the right area today. 6.6mm after 5mm overnight. Last hailshower was the strongest on the day. Winds to 40 knots from the south with near whiteout conditions for 3-4 minutes.

Back to sunshine and that should be it.

Need to work on this low pressure system.

On and north of the ranges have had little to no rain for almost 6 weeks now and after temps of 23-25c up that way yesterday things are drying up fast hoping this low comes of and forms a bit further north than progged.

It was quite an interesting night last night with strong to gale force northwesterly winds probably averaging around 65 km/h at our place, just a guess, but sounds right, and then very strong gusts near the change as forecasted. We also got our fair share of rainfall, with 8.8mm to 9am this morning, very heavy showers and squalls were associated, but no thunderstorms down this way for once this time... kind of glad, I was in school so I would have missed it... haha.

Also, I am off to the snow tomorrow, and will not arrive till Sunday morning, but I will try and post tomorrow night at our stop-over.

Further 3.2mm in Ferny Creek today so ~8mm for the last 12 hours. Got one hail shower and one roll of thunder (on the heavy shower at 2pm). Not too bad for us in the end (though did expect about 15mm). Didn't see any sleet, though suspect there would have been the odd wet flake around 2pm at the very tops of the range with the temperature dipping below 3C at 550m.

Max today was 14.9C at 1am and got cooler pretty much all day after that.

It sleeted in Hallam i shit you not...about 2ish we had a very dark cell move in, you could see the hail curtains all around, but instead the hail was soft and very small, must have been so close to sleet its not funny. It also didnt fall with the intensity of hail either, i picked up a small piece and it wasnt round like a pea it was smallish and wet/soft. Hail curtains went for miles both East and West so someone else could tell me if it was or not.

That coincides with the hail I got. There was a real blast of frigid air for 20 minutes, then the temp went up 5 degrees in a couple of minutes.

Brilliant day up the snow today looking at the cams.

Anthony that sounds like graupel (ice pellets). We get them quite often in the Dandenongs in vigorous showers and it'll fall quite happily up to 5-7C. It usually forms in winter coldies when there is a mix of snow and super cooled rain in the cloud. Graupel is the result of a layer of water freezing around a snow flake - the snow flake forms the core and is soft with lots of air pockets which is why it is soft. They fall a lot quicker than snow flakes and so can make it to the ground when the snow flakes will have long melted.

Graupel is great to hear and watching coming through the forest. It makes a strange swishing noise.

I believe we had some also - from my wifes description of the "hail" - but wasn't around.

I would guess that a lot of the low level reports of snow that you hear at odd temperatures are actually graupel.
