Aerial photos of Marysville and Kinglake
I flew over this area on my way back from Canada on the 29th April. If you remember just before that day there was a cold spell and snow fell over the alpine country. Was so ironic to see the snow on the mountaintops near Marysville. I posted these photos to Redbubble but thought you might like to see them here. Very sobering and sad. I was just gobsmacked by the extent of the burnt out land from the air

Was up Marysville a couple of weeks back. Had spent many days up there in the past and was shocked at the devastation. The scale of the fire just blew me away with the valleys below Lake Mt looking like they had been nuked with telegraph pole trees. Was so "horrible" that I'm not really rushing to go back. Is going to take decades to recover given intensity of the fire. One concerning thing was how many tree ferns had died. Even where the fire had been mild or patch there were extensive areas of dead tree ferns - suggesting they just couldn't cope with the very hot dry spell of Jan/Feb.
Thankfully the Black Spur, Mt Toolangi and around Warburton was pretty much untouched or "cool burnt" so will like pre-fire within a season or two.

Did anyone happen to check out the Herald Sun a few days back with the pictures of Marysville/Kinglake covered in snow with the remnants of swamp gums and mountain ash poking out like toothpicks? Very chilling and confronting in terms of what the people of those regions are living through outside of temp accomodation.

Yes I saw that in the papers and the tv coverage on the news. My heart went out to those people who are now shivering through snow in their makeshift accommodation. At least the young ones had some fun with it.
