N NSW/SE QLD - Major ECL Event - May 18th-24th 2009
An incredible setup for the east coast this weekend with large amounts of moisture fed in from two ports, the jet stream laden with moisture from the Indian Ocean and the easterly fetch which is pumping in tonnes of low level moisture which means near saturation for the region. An upper disturbance should enhance a surface trough already in the region by mid week which should ensure a large low pressure system will develop.
Could see some May records tumble as well, in terms of daytime temps and rainfall.
If only it could come southwards

Your all clear for take off John!! Great to have you on board.
Already some of the shower streams on the GC clocking up.. Springbrook nearing 80mm and the Tamborine Ranges region sitting closer to 55mm.
Things are starting to shift more ENE in flow so the showers are in the process of increasing over much of western Brisbane right now and into the Darling Downs.
SWW as below...

IDQ20032
Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology
Queensland
TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST
SEVERE WEATHER WARNING
for Flash Flooding
For people in the Southeast Coast District and the Wide Bay and Burnett district
south of Sandy Cape
Issued at 10:00 pm on Monday 18 May 2009
Synoptic Situation:
A strong upper low will move across southern Queensland during the next few
days. As it moves eastward, this system will generate a strong surface trough
about the southern coast.
Areas of heavy rain are expected to develop about the Southeast Coast district
and the Wide Bay and Burnett district south of Sandy Cape as early as Tuesday
morning, but more likely later in the day, and extending into Wednesday and
Thursday. Some localised flash flooding is possible associated with the heavier
falls.
Winds around the southern coast are expected to increase from about mid week

Re: N NSW/SE QLD - Major ECL Event - May 18th-24th 2009
Hey Karl and others.
Great to be on here and thanks for asking mate.
Yeah certaintly looks good for the east coast, particularly SE QLD I must say. Will be interesting flying back to Melbourne from Cairns on Thursday, I wonder if we will get some turbulence - I hope so! Anyway, some big falls will happen and its only a matter of time, but yeah as John says, 'lucky buggers'! Haha, our time will come soon.
Sorry for going off topic.

Re: N NSW/SE QLD - Major ECL Event - May 18th-24th 2009
You don't need to be sorry!!
Welcome mate. I have missed your input. There is going to be some mid level turbulence for sure through QLD and NSW but that is pretty normal. I have flown back from SE QLD in clear skies with mega turbulence.
Anyhow the rainfall over the SE of QLD will impact the weather in a weeks time in our neck of the woods, mainly in the eastern half of the state.
Rain really spreading out now in the lower levels, inland towards the Darling Downs.

Here in McDowall, it started raining at about 18:00 local time, and I don't think it's stopped during the 12 hours since.
The garden is getting a great soaking and I think our lawn is shouting "Hallelujah!"
I hope our dams are also getting this.

Looks to be a substantial event setting up over the Brisbane Valley with heavy rain right through this morning. Should see some very big falls in the metropolitan area this morning making peak hour hell this morning.

Lots of 100mm+ showing up now with rain widely falling at 10-20mm/hr. Only a little while before these totals translate into flooding. The radar looks amazing (though I imagine those in SE QLD are a bit sick of rain by now).
Re: N NSW/SE QLD - Major ECL Event - May 18th-24th 2009
Looking like the rain is still yet to peak and I think that will happen on and north of Brisbane. Be some big falls about the SC tonight.

Re: N NSW/SE QLD - Major ECL Event - May 18th-24th 2009
I have an add-in for my Firefox browser which pops up a notice every time the current weather changes at Brisbane International Airport which is our nearest AWS to McDowall.
I have been online since 0415 today and it has been popping up many times alternating between "Rain" and "Heavy Rain" and with the temperature fluctuating between 18ºC and 17ºC.
Meanwhile, the peak-hour traffic on Old Northern Road outside our front door keeps on coming to a standstill because people here in QLD just don't seem to know how to drive in the rain. When it is not at a stand-still there is the constant loud swishing of large quantities of water being displaced by the tyres.
I am glad I do not have to ride my motorbike anywhere this morning!
We still have not seen any breaks in the rain at all.

Hi Phil.
Plenty more rain to com and the dams will get a fair bit too our of this sequence. The traffic in QLD must be frightening this morning. In the dry it's bad enough

Bit of a shift in the rain now as the weather becomes organized. Some heavy rain now developing for most regions now. Noosa has some heavy rain and Redcliffe copping 34mm since 9.

Hi all, we're a little south of Bundaberg and we've had 80 mils here since yesterday
Re: N NSW/SE QLD - Major ECL Event - May 18th-24th 2009
Fantastic stuff EP. There is a lot more to come particularly to the south as you can see on radar.
Today we will see this system graduate beyond the normal barrier. Should be widespread flooding of creeks through today north of Brisbane. Redcliffe up to 140mm.

Near 300mm in the Sunshine Coast hinterland as well with fairly intense rain still falling.

Well some exceptional rainfall about the Brisbane Valley. The CBD is up to 63mm with the main band pushing south but now showers and storms will dev from the NW and spread to heavy rain overnight again.
We need it here!!$

Some incredible totals for this event, and good to see Somerset over 200mm so far and Wivenhoe over 180mm.
Was just telling a friend of mine who lives on the SC how insane it is, but thinking about it it isnt really as this is quite normal for them.

Re: N NSW/SE QLD - Major ECL Event - May 18th-24th 2009
Well, it was certainly wild while it lasted.
We had more rain overnight here in McDowall, but it had cleared by the time I got up at 04:00 local time. Today was a sunny day all day here, but there was a constant huge cloud mass just to our south. It reminded me of being just outside the outer rain bands of a typhoon in the South China Sea. In this case, the rotation was the other way around with all the outer rain bands moving in a clockwise direction. I haven't looked anything up yet, but I imagine the Gold Coast and Border Ranges were really copping it all day and I guess northern NSW as well.
I didn't get a chance to get online yesterday, but it was certainly unforgettable.
I was relief teaching at a school in the Pine Rivers area and shortly after 09:00, maybe 30 to 40 minutes after school started we were ordered to evacuate the school due to expected floods. The rain was driving down just like being in a Hong Kong typhoon.
Some parents were unable to reach the school to collect their children due to being cut off by floodwaters. Mobile phones ran hot as arrangements were made for neighbours and friends to pick up kids. Some teachers were unable to get home and had to sleep last night at the homes of teachers who lived locally.
As I drove home I was amazed at just how very many roads had been closed by flooding. Fortunately, all my river crossings were still above the flood waters.
Many, many rescues had to be made when cars trucks and four wheel drives were swept off flooded roads. Other rescues were made when mudslides swept away houses. Two suburban railways had to be closed. Many bus routes had to be cancelled. Lots of CBD workers had to get hotel/motel rooms in the city, since they were unable to get home.
My wife said she heard on the news today that many parts of Brisbane received a normal year's rainfall in a single day.

Certainly sounds like a wild time Phil. I have watched the news footage on TV today. One car was washed from a carpark onto the beach on the Gold Coast. So much rain, a year's supply in one day. Sounds like chaos at your school today
Re: N NSW/SE QLD - Major ECL Event - May 18th-24th 2009
Focus of the heavy rain is now in NSW as anticipated. Some big falls but nothing that remarkable for NE NSW. Top falls since 9am are below.

A friend of mine that lives at Currumbin beach on the Gold Coast took this photo of the car that washed out of the carpark onto the beach yesterday

Great to hear so many good falls and a wicked system. up in the Airbus A321 flying back from Cairns, the cloud features looked great at 33,000 ft - but the flight was very turbulent! The seat belt sign was turned on for most of the flight. Was rough, but fun! Just thought I would chuck in that comment.
