Re: Victoria: Significant Cold Outbreak - September 25th-29th 2009
Disappointing here so far. Fine and sunny with temperature 9c and well on it's way to double figures. We have had quite a few very brief light showers this morning but most of the time it has been sunny. Frustrating with a field of widespread showers right over us all morning but missing most of them by a couple of km. I know the 'main event' is still to come but IMO it looks very patchy and not coming in with any real authority at all. I was expecting signs of more vigorous showers coming in. Could be a big disappointment away from the coasts today.
You mean 60mm since the 22nd Dagget and 34mm for this current system?
We've had 47.7mm here since the 22nd and 79.1mm for the month.

Very patchy light rain has just started here. First time today.
How often can we spruce about beating average monthly records? Yeah baby!
Melbourne City rainfall records:
September 2009 Total 60.6mm 12 day(s)
September 1855-2008 Average Total 57.9mm 14.7 day(s)

Very heavy showers have intruded their way through here since my last post at about 9.30am. More mm into the gauge, and we even had some thunder!!!!! Radar looks fantastic atm, with a bit of lightning mixed into the lot. Some moderate to heavy rain developing too across the south...

Re: Victoria: Significant Cold Outbreak - September 25th-29th 2009
Have to say today has ended up much less active than the models were expecting, although GFS did downgrade early today. I think EC was on to it though that we wouldn't get the rain areas and widespread heavy showers that most of us were anticipating.
What we have today is just your standard unstable cold pool airmass with heaps of showers around like we often get in winter in vigorous southerlies but nothing noteworthy whatsoever.
Hovering between 6C and 7C, gloomy and overcast for much of the time but showers are constantly dodging here. Only expecting another mm or two here for the rest of the weekend. Grand Final should dodge too much bad weather, just a few showers for the remainder of the match, could be heavy of course.

Been doom and gloom since about 1.30 this arvo. Heavy dumpage before and just recvieved a light hail dump. Puddles everywhere and not game enough to step outside without sinking into the mud LOL

bit dissapointed with the RF totals considering how good the radar looks or maybe they are too busy to update cause they are watching the grand final

Re: Victoria: Significant Cold Outbreak - September 25th-29th 2009
Great arvo up here. Had frequent rain, hail and graupel showers with 8mm so far (80mm for the week!). Got a couple of rolls of thunder and banks of fog. Was up at Olinda when the wind change came through - hailed solid for nearly 10 minutes and had to sit it out at the side of the road (will upload photos).
Just back from Olinda and it was snowing in the last shower - about 90% hail and about 10% big wet flakes - would guess a temperature just below 4C. Pretty marginal temperatures for snow but should see a bit more overnight provided the showers are heavy enough.
Reckon we will get another 30mm at least before it clear Monday AM. Creeks up here are running very well but well short of flooding.

13.6mm down the hill with 6 hail showers, thunder and squally winds.
Showers should increase tonight... Nearly 100mm for the week

Hinzey earlier on during the 3rd qtr let me know that there was about 20cm of snow at Donna Buang.
Well done to the Cats, after being so strong for 3 years deserve at least 2. Small forwards for the Saints cost them dearly, gotta take ya chances.

Re: Victoria: Significant Cold Outbreak - September 25th-29th 2009
I find it absolutely remarkable that a SW wind basically means no rain for my area, literally.
Of course it is well known that we do poorly here with SW airflow but in recent years it has got so bad that you can pretty much write off any recordable rain whatsoever if the wind is from that direction. It is so bad here in SW winds that I'd rate it only behind NWs in summer in terms of associated dry weather.
I may have a warped memory of things but I'm pretty certain we used to at least get some sort of decent rainfall if there was a strong and dynamic system (strong low pressure nearby etc.) even if the airflow was W/SW or straight SW. It would be several times less than what the eastern suburbs of Melbourne and the hills east of Melbourne got sure but we would always get at least a few really good showers. We are looking at a very dry weekend here, could be lucky to pick up a few mm by the end of it and that all means no snow on Mount Macedon at all.
Very frustrating, sometimes it is a very frustrating business being interested in the weather.

Haha, that's funny. As soon as I post that we get a moderate intensity shower and the temperature plummets to 3C, down 2C in about 5 minutes and that definitely means snow at the top of Mount Macedon. Still it is the first decent shower we've had all day.

Re: Victoria: Significant Cold Outbreak - September 25th-29th 2009
Plent of heavy showers here this afternoon, continuing this evening. I was locking in the cows tonight and bamn, hail shower, some of it hurt too, though lucky I was smart enough to wear a coat... ...
Expect scattered showers to continue through southern regions of Victoria tonight, with isolated showers extending north of the Divide. The activity should persist for most of the night, and as the southwesterly airflow will continue to bring scattered showers tomorrow, but mostly for the southern parts, near the coast etc... Isolated cold-air thunderstorms continue to be possible through the south overnight.
BTW, VERY windy here right now....
