Yeah firestorm we just got our power back 10-15 mins ago. Been off for a little bit too.
That first initial rainband went through here just before 4pm and it was mad. I was driving of course and it was seriously like dodgem cars. Our car (Kia Grand Carnival) was jerking to the left and right in the very strong winds. A good day so far in-terms of weather, though sad to hear of a death.
Heavy rain as well before, but short lived and now we should get heavy showers with good as squalls in them and the good old thunderstorms!!!!! I am watching the Mt. Gambier line now for any severe activity that may develop.

DC, I suspect the risk still remains for embeded thunder/lightning within the rain band. I think you will have to wait though for the coldies tomorrow night perhaps or on Thursday/Friday in particular.
Small red-core on the MT. Gambier line now.

surprisingly mild before the change and very windy. Great watching the front approach on radar with the lightning tracker showing many lightning strikes and from what it looked like was going to smash Ballarat. Alas fizzled! Just a rainy windy change. 6mm in the gauge wind is now more colder WNW but at least it has eased off somewhat.

4.5 mm in our gauge here in Kerang, probably under-reading due to sheltering effect of bushes in horizontal rain like that so maybe around 7 mm in reality. I think we might get more from this low as it slings another front or two around it over the next coupla days.

Have heard reports of a lot of damage in the town of Talbot, so much that they are offering community meals at the town hall

My neighbours big peppercorn tree lost a very large branch that landed in the two neighbours behind us's back yards. Not sure about the one behind him but the people over my back fence were lucky as it just brushed the carport and clothsline.
Will take a bit of getting rid of but

Would'nt be surprised Stormsky, Talbot is just down the road from Maryborough, and plenty of damage around our area i've heard.

Well another fizzer for us (in a long long line of fizzers). Just 3.5mm all up from the rainband. Can't see much more around Melbourne until well into tomorrow (when the next trough comes through). North (particularly northeast) and southwest Vic will see lots more showers/rain overnight with some big falls likely (good for runoff).
Re: South East low sequence June 27-July 6 2009
12.1mm here all up, there was 3.6mm in the gauge when I got up this morning at 6am and it would have been around 5mm by the time I left at around 7am, wouldn't have a clue how much we got with the rain band itself but reports of some loud thunder and brief downpours.
Less than I was expecting but probably what the model consensus was going for here in the end. Spitting drizzly rain atm.

Yeah considering what was progged once again it was lower that the estimates in general down here only 2mm here.. Even with the warmer temps ahead of the front we still didnt get much rain.
I did say 2 to 7mm last night across Melbourne with 2mm Western suburbs and 7mm out east and SE and wasn't that far away off the mark especially this side of town.

Re: South East low sequence June 27-July 6 2009
The deal with these gale force north-westerlies is that it drives the rain band across at warp speed, it was a very intense rain band with heaps of embedded thunder and some downpours, but as many of us often notice it just gets ripped apart off the ranges as it gets into Melbourne and leeward of the ranges. It moves quickly through here too but there is usually more of it developing thanks to the uplift from the mountains so we get under it for longer, enough to get half decent falls. If there were less severe winds the system would have moved through more slowly and you could have doubled rainfall totals more or less.
Just had an intense burst of 'torrential' drizzle before that lasted about 10 seconds.
Solid rain coming down in sheets now, small drops, just easing off again as I type.

Mt Hotham tops the charts with 32mm and a wind gust of 158km/h
Got very nasty wind-wise in town before the change, but as Andrew mentioned, the speed of the front gave us little chance of good falls. Looking forward to the next front which will bring more wintery conditions

Should also mention that Cape Otway pressure bombed to 982.3 @ 1500hrs.

11mm since 7am here and now a nice bit of drizzle will be interested to see how much this system gives us. Missed out on recording this mornings downpour but it was impressive to hear on the roof when you wake up.

We have had a couple of hours of wind and rain 17mm in the gauge. Will be interesting to have a look around in the morning for wind damage.See Thredbo has had 42.8mm rain not that far away really.

Re: South East low sequence June 27-July 6 2009
Best falls last night around the NE ranges with 52mm at Mt Buffalo, 44mm at Hotham, and 40mm at Hunter Hill. Also some big falls around the southwest and Grampians 30mm at Casterton and 25mm at Mt William. Again today the west and northern slopes will pick up the best of it in very strong WNW winds.
South's turn will come tomorrow as a strong wave "low" - possibly closed - passes through Bass Strait. Models have heavy falls with this in system in place like the Otways, Yarra Ranges and south Gippsland - wouldn't be surprised to see ~50mm across Thurs->Sat in the Dandenongs. Interesting that EC is edging towards the very wet GFS scenario (of the low cutting off) leaving us in prolonged convergent SW flow.

Nice area of heavy showers/storms moving through Mt Gambier ATM on a follow-up front. This should be moving into central Vict early afternoon around peak heating so is worth watching closely for possible thunder/hail.
Re: South East low sequence June 27-July 6 2009
A few showers this morning have been welcome. N winds still quite strong and temp has dropped a bit.
Fingers crossed this afternoon. Could be a bit noisy and photogenic.
