Nice area of rain moving up onto the coast in gippsland this morning... Should see some good totals there. For Central I think it still looks ok with the wrap around skirting us so another 5-10 mm should be a chance for us.

Re: Victoria: Low pressure System and Rain event. August 9th-15th 2009
Meso-laps has the flow slowly going SW today with SW'lies through-out central areas by night. The rain is best along the coast - about 25mm through south Gippsland and the Otways... with a few falls around 10mm already starting to pop up (11.6mm Cape Otway, Pt Hicks 8mm).
Melbourne is touch and go - would expect some showers but the further south and east the better they will be. I anticipate a very showery/drizzly ~24-36 hours up here in the Dandenongs from early afternoon but this system has not really followed the script so will just wait and see.
BTW lots of nice puffs of fog up here this morning drifting through the trees and thick fog down the hill around Upwey. Looks great.

Very thick fog up here this morning and looks like some mid level cloud above(can't see it) as it is very grey outside. This might hang around for a while. Very balmy night too and after that little shower just stayed warmish with next to no breeze and partly cloudy.

Had a bad gut feeling about it since 10am yesterday and hasn't left me ever since didn't like it and its starting to show why. Revised my total here from 20mm on the weekend to 10mm yesterday morning to 5mm max now for this system here.
Well 4.8mm here and hardly expect anything more here. My gut feeling never lets me down felt this way since Monday morning that this Cut off low won't go to script considering the potential it had it has been a big flop sorry guys don't want to be negative but just calling it as it is.. Put it this way in my whole life as far as I can remember I have never known a cut off low to produce this limited rain for us here.

Dull and misty all day here with a bit of intermittant drizzle. 1.5mm's of rain since 9am making a total of just under 6mm's with this system so far. Top temp today has been just 11.3c but its still close to that now. Don't think much more rain from this system now, so as i thought really a couple of days ago.

Like you Dane, a murky miserable day with very little activity.

Re: Victoria: Low pressure System and Rain event. August 9th-15th 2009
Very foggy up here for most of today - viz down to ~100m. Drizzle has been with us since ~10am and has been heavy at times with ~3.5mm since 9am. Expect the drizzle will be with us all night and wouldn't be surprised to see a further 10mm up here.
BTW some rather heavy rain is now showing up in Gippsland with a series of wrap around - sadly a bit too far east for central areas. This system is certainly not over for Vic.

Re: Victoria: Low pressure System and Rain event. August 9th-15th 2009
I actually quite like days like today, although preferably a little more water actually falling from the sky, rather than just hanging there....
Real winters day, and love it being so grey and misty. Took the dog for a walk before and loved every minute of it!
Very wet under foot around here ATM, even muddy in the wetter areas, like sink in over the toes of your shoes muddy. But I keep having the horrible thought of when is the usual warm spell that we get in mid August gonna turn up? and that this is as wet as it is gonna get just when we would actually get some run off being as wet as it is ATM, if it actually rains that is......
Anyway fingers crossed we skip the usual warm spell and go right through to a wet September like we used to get........

Try the weekend. EC has 850Ts on Sunday morning of 14C over Gippsland. If that were to come through in the middle of the day Melbourne would run a serious risk of a record high August maximum temperature.
Back to very thick drizzle up here...
Re: Victoria: Low pressure System and Rain event. August 9th-15th 2009
Very thick drizzle here for about 2hrs this afternoon got things really wet but has eased back a bit but now increased. I have done OK with 4mm or so since 9am. I think with the current setup I would be dissapointed not to get 8-12mm out of this tonight.
Looking good for the weekend, but very very windy. I think Saturday we will shoot into the low 20s in Melbourne and next week looks quite up and down. Thundery changes with period of rain on each, temps ahead of the fronts could get towards 23C in the south and higher 20s in the north. But they present rainfall on each front.
This westerly belt is certainly showing signs of strengthening.

Hows the weekend system look DJ with EC and other models? Should we start a new thread for that.
few spits here today but nothing registable seems like once again the best drizzle rainfall has been out east.

Yeah but the difference is it looks to be fairly short lived.
Im talking about the warm spells where it start at 18, then creeps up day by day over a 7-9 day period until is maxes out at around 23. I remember one in 95? im pretty sure, where it did this.
A single day of 23 with an 18 the day before is O.K by me.
Re: Victoria: Low pressure System and Rain event. August 9th-15th 2009

Re: Victoria: Low pressure System and Rain event. August 9th-15th 2009
Getting the solid drizzle here now although the drops are almost large enough to call it rain. Will be interesting to see how long we are stuck under this for, the radar shows it banking up on the south side of the ranges.
Aside from that I have very little to report for this system. As of last night I'd had a grand total of 6.6mm, might add a bit to that tonight. With the unseasonal warmth set to blast us on the weekend and again mid next week and ahead of any of these strong fronts in the models, it is starting to look very spring like. In fact forget that we are in August the weather atm is classic early to mid September. We are basically 2 weeks to a month ahead of ourselves thanks to climate change.
What is also spring like is the thermal gradient right through the levels of the atmosphere that we are going to see with the passage of these fronts. With a moist environment ahead of and with the fronts this should allow fairly decent activity on the line of the front itself and also behind as cold uppers and lower levels combine to create some weather. With the temperatures we are likely to see ahead of the fronts you'd have to think storms and possible squall line development. Probably a good thing we are seeing early warmth before El Nino can dry up the NW flow into systems because that's what gives us all heavy rain.

A bit of a dud overnight and today. Wasn't the worst outcome but given the setup I expected more. Anyway 6mm overnight bringing the event total to 11mm.
Weekend looking interesting and quite warm.
Potential for a bit of rain Sunday but mostly windblown.

Well a dud. Heavy drizzle promptly eased at ~8:30 last night then ~6 hours of mizzle which only added up at ~0.1mm/hour. 6mm to this morning and an event total of about 15mm.
Few good falls overnight in Gippsland (20mm+) but at the end of the day very poor for a moist onshore low event. Much better for Tassie (yet again).

Re: Victoria: Low pressure System and Rain event. August 9th-15th 2009
Just said in the other thread we have really thick fog up here this morning. best there has been for a long time. Pity we didn't have a system that could use the moisture now. This morning and yesterday were the first fogs we have had in a couple of weeks so moisture seems to have returned. Now the winds coming will blow it all away

Yes a bit of dud here. 2mm from drizzle yesterday bringing the total for this system to 5.5mm. However I do like drizzly days, I don't know why.

Re: Victoria: Low pressure System and Rain event. August 9th-15th 2009
Hey guys. Took me forever to find this forum after I lost the address.
Nice and foggy here this morning. Seems to have lifted a bit now. Visability was down to 20 meters on the highway to echuca this morning.
Now even upto 2 days ago weatherzone wasn't even on this. So was very surprised when storms started firing. Did about 180kms of chasing to end up back at home to watch the show. Haha. Ah well. Now if I can figure out how to post images on here....
These taken looking north East as 2 seperate cells mature and collide. Some nice booming thunder and a couple of cg's is a nice way to end a working day...
