Looks like a potential storm band developing around Ballarat. It is definitely cold enough for hail providing the band is intense enough.

The next one is just about to hit us, was watching it approach from the west, sure getting colder air with it.

Yeah, watching the dark clouds looming across the west. Looking a bit 'stormier' than what we had this morning. Only a very narrow band though so it will come and go in a flash. Would love to see some hail from it.

Bit more wind with this one, no wonder it is moving so fast!

Winds to 50 knots with this line as it moved through Laverton. Should see some significant wind across particularly E Melbourne with local hail and the odd clap of thunder. 2-4mm in it for most.

Another burst of showers about 1hr behind this line.

It looks like it is carrying some wind. I hope it remains strong as it approaches Lilydale. It looks as though it is narrowing.

Wow finally got on here. As Karl expected it was a wild, wild night up here in the hills near the northern face. I could hardly sleep all night, the wind was just howling and I always worry about the huge pines on the north side of us next door. We had blackouts off and on all night and then this morning when we finally got the power back on I switched on the gateway and it exploded. It was the CPU. A few minutes later the power went off again. A friend came round this arvo fortunately who originally built the gateway so he did us another one as we had a spare old computer so I'm finally back online.

About 6 trees went down in Ferny Creek, the Mt Dandenong Tourist road was blocked between Sassafras and Ferny Creek, still is, two huge pines across the road bringing down power lines. I walked up and took photos so will post later. I heard trees were blocking the Mountain Highway too. I guess we won't see the full extent of destruction up here till tonight or when the local paper comes out.

The next line looks pretty wild as well. Heading straight for Melbourne although thinning out inland which is to be expected now with winds turning more W.

Yeah the one behind it has more potential. When it crosses over the water I think it will pretty intense.

well today started at around 5:45am with thunder waking me, very very windy although not much rainfall with the storms this morning. Been a funny day really windy then not so, steady rain when the wind died off, then the sun came out and was quite pleasant, then the wind picked up around 3:30 and a squally horizontal hail shower zoomed through and the sun then came back out. Becoming black again with another sideways hail shower.

Nice CC and thunder close by, very wild winds mainly to the south of me. Looks like Rowville and Endeavour Hills copped the worst of it. I had heavyish rainfall for about 10 minutes with another 1.6mm.

Next line looks very very windy. I think we will see a period of rain on this band which is the cold air boundary. Should be another 3-5mm in it for many.

Gee this next band is looking very well defined. Looks as though it is packing a bit of a punch and has further potential to grow.

Ripper through here - two cloud to ground strikes just to the south and about 5 minutes of heavy rain and hail. Up to 8mm for the day... Very pleased with the way the day is turning out.

The next line is also look very nice - almost worth a race to the lookout.

Just got word that a friends place in Kallista was split in two last night from a Blackwood. Thankfully all ok but must have been a hell of a shock. I suspect last night was the worst up here since autumn last year and the heatwaves of Jan/Feb must have weakened a lot of trees/branches.

I wonder if the cold air further towards the W district will make it?? I get the sense that these are all diuranally enduced.

Sitting on 10mm for the day which is about 5mm more than what I expected.

A very useful system. First system for a while that didn't have the northerly component eroded precip wise by El Nino.

I'm not 100% sure if we are really under much influence from El Nino atm, waters right around AUS are in a state of positive anomaly. It is basically a warm neutral setup atm if you take into account the 30 and 90 day SOI and trends and the SST situation. But anyway, it has been a great system and probably the best since that day in March when we had a similar succession of heavy bands of showers/storms. This time though the Great Dividing Range has done best although I would expect Melbourne to pick up totals with the next lot.

The general outlook is looking really good as well although a bit frustrating watching things get even more zonal as we get further ahead. When are we going to get a deep and vigorous southerly, this is getting ridiculous. Evil or Very Mad

Still, great day today. cheers

Look it may be warmer than normal but if we are scoring frequent rain events, I would just leave it in a NW/SW flow for the forseeable future. It is working Smile

Yeah, the extra warmth is adding significantly more vigour into the systems than you would normally expect at this time of year thanks to steeper thermal gradient , it is spring like atm and we still have the good moisture available that we have had for most of winter. Basically speaking it is fast tracking spring rains. That is something we haven't seen in recent years, and as we all know spring is the time of year with greatest potential for heavy rain from very strong cold fronts.

Also the most important time of the year to get good rains, particularly from a horticultural and agricultural perspective.

21.5mm here now, got 0.5mm from the last band.
