Just got smacked by a squally storm here. Hail galore gathered up all against the walls driven by the wind-you could fill buckets with it all. Would have been an absolute nightmare out on the Monash in this! The gutters were really flowing here.

Pretty sure Lilydale just had a couple of gusts in excess of 120

An amazing 10minutes of repeated CG and hail. Me thinks the rain gauge is full of ice. May post picts later.

Hey BOM, severe squall warning? Road Weather Alert?
Re: Victoria: Cold Outbreak. Series of Strong Cold Fronts. August 23rd - 28th 2009
Yeah Jase, I was going to add "take Hinch' explanation with grain of salt"
Re: Victoria: Cold Outbreak. Series of Strong Cold Fronts. August 23rd - 28th 2009
We had thunder, hail, very heavy rain and the trees were bending over. sheets of rain, unbelievable, i have never seen anything like this anywhere, literally. the closest i have ever seen would have been up at alice springs one night, but the winds weren't as strong as this.

Stopped raining here, kind of calm atm but nice and cold. A few TV channels have gone down including digital, I'm hoping it's not the antenna.

6mm here, really windy, heavy rain for maybe 10 mins.
Personally didn't see anything really special, although looking out the window during the heaviest was a sight to see.
I just want the rain following the front to be special. That is what will get me excited!

we only got the tail end of it here and it was intense. Was in the Hospital when it came through and you could still here it. A few small branches down but that about all damage i saw.

I'd say the weather we just had here was at least a one in ten year event. I'd be interested to see some reports out of Lilydale, but that was absolutely wild, so lucky that no trees were uprooted, although I haven't looked out the front yet..

Quite possibly the scariest drive home ever. Rain falling sideways with such force, traffic was down to 10kmh on dorset road. Multiple lightning strikes overhead. Decided to take the back roads to find numerous fallen trees. passed a couple of ses vehicles doing their rounds. Very intense. Have not had an experience like that in a couple of years.

Terry Ryan prretty much spot on. A few showers and a 20 minute burst of winter rain at 5. Gave everyting a good clean except the bay.
Was a ceiling of grey over the bay, a band of duck ebb blue over to the west revealing some weak structure then it went dark.

Just got SMS from Karl, and I quote:
"Ahhhh mental. Some trees down in the street, power on now. Hail to marble size, no internet access. 10mm here in many minutes"

The structure must have quickly fixed itself by the time it got to Caulfield and out here in Lilydale. I think the NW airstream collided with a SW by the look of the radar and must have provided some extra energy.

And Im back....
Was just intense, the winds were the worst just before the squall. I couldn't hear the thunder over the 110kmh NW winds!! It was one of the more bizarre weather experiences in a long while. And have a thunderstorm move up from the SW like that was strange too. One flang as winds went WNW and hail to marble size from what I could see after it passed. 10.2mm here and some of the heaviest rain of the year for about 7 minutes. Pools of water in the backyard now.
It is not over either. Watch these showers as they come in from the WSW and there is a good deal of thunderstorm and hail activity to our WSW too.

Dammit, i missed it all and i was looking outside the whole time. Sure there was heavy rain, but when the storm past, there was no lightning nor hail.

Just went for a drive, widespread destruction, trees down absolutely everywhere, all over roads, could just get through some places...only went locally didnt want to go too near the bush as trees could still fall....actually worse than i thought, must be like this in a few places...there will be a lot of damage

Karl, what do you think made this event so intense? I had pretty much ruled out the storm for once and it tore through.

I was chatting online to a friend in Mt Evelyn as it all came through, she was getting upset and demanding to know where her lightning, hail and thunder was, then she just disappeared! I've just checked my phone, her power's out, explains the sudden silence lol!
I can only imagine there'd be quite a few trees down up there tonight. 5mm here from the storm
Edited to add: She's just texted to say she's cooking by candlelight with two little kids scared of the dark and that they copped it pretty bad up there.
