Re: Victoria: Cold Outbreak. Series of Strong Cold Fronts. August 23rd - 28th 2009
Have not checked the gauge yet for this morning, but will do shortly. It rained very heavily most of the night here i'd say, with hail chucked into the mix, and three CG lightning strikes from what I could see. A couple of showers are still persisting now. Very windy last night, thought the roof was going to blow off, reached gusts to 89 km/h.
Expect to see rain areas develop from the west this afternoon and spread eastwards, locally heavy falls and squalls likely. Squalls IMO more likely following the band of rain when showers follow it. ISolated thunderstorms should also develop over the west this afternoon with prime heating ahead of the front and on it, and there IMO could be some locally severe thunderstorms develop with large hail and damaging winds. And then col-air thunderstorms following the rain are likely. Very windy again today with peak gusts to 120 km/h in showers and thunderstorms.
Talk later.

7mm here so not to bad for being in a windy rain shadow. Hopefully the next front gets me well and truly over the 10mm disappointment mark. The third front even looks a bit of a chance going by the sat pick. only another 11mm to reach the monthly average!

A very welcome 15.5mm in Ferny Creek - about as expected. Would have liked 20mm (maybe today?). Very chilly - probably cold enough for snow at the top of the range ATM but no showers about.
Re: Victoria: Cold Outbreak. Series of Strong Cold Fronts. August 23rd - 28th 2009
Not a lot of wind this morning (certainly a lot coming from Andrew Bolt this morning!!) but I suspect it to increase rapidly as the temp rises. Watch for a convective period during the afternoon ahead of the next strong front.
Looks showery and windy tomorrow for the SE suburbs.

Bright & sunny here this morning, a bit on the chilly side too. Tipped 4mm out of the gauge. Looking forward to the next front later today.

4 to 5 mm from this little event up in the north around Kerang and Cohuna. Has pushed the August totals up by 50%. Wind and solid rain with the front - just not as sustained as it was further south. At least we got reasonable northerly penetration this time though, we'll see later whether the next front can push right up here. Very timely rain, the crops will just love it

Got 20mm last night which was totally unexpected. Good to see the BOM had showers on the forecast, although rained solidly for about 9 hours . But thats the sort of forecast stuff-up I don't mind.
Looks as though light rain areas to develop later, though that could mean anything.

Good drop there Rhino. Should see another 10-15mm up there later.
Better prospects of prolonged rain Fri-Sun Ned. 20mm possible.

Busy day so will keep it short. Looks like another good burst of rain moving across the state today (into Melbourne late afternoon) with the next front. This has rather cold air with it - thickness values of about 529 - so could see a bit of snow about the tops of the Dandenongs

Had a really windy night out here last night. Think there was a couple of trees down on property. Nothing damadged though. I do however need calabrate my barometer. At 1:30am it 959hPa. Haha. Got a nice drop of 12mm as well.

Re: Victoria: Cold Outbreak. Series of Strong Cold Fronts. August 23rd - 28th 2009
11mm here overnight and very welcome indeed. After so many teasers over the last 10 days, I was very happy to wake up to a decent drop.
Put us up to 48mm or there about for the month. Average is 77mm for Mitcham according to the BOM site, so gonna go close to that at a minimum and hopefully beat it by a little assuming today and Friday/Sat deliver.
Been a good August really even if we don't go over the average. So Many Augusts I remember have a big spell of dry warm and stable weather sometime during the middle/later period of the month. Which has usually lead into a drier than average spring. So good signs about ATM.

Gees would have been a good gale up there last night Rik to get some trees down. Very useful rain up your way too!!
Luke signs are there for further rain beyond the weekend with moisture influx likely from the NW again.

Karl, was listening to Bolter in the car. Suddenly the car was warm and I didn't have my heater on!!
9mm at Doncaster East, looking forward to another wooly night ahead.

The change is moving at 60 knots. That will tanslate to winds on the directional shift this afternoon.

We got 20mm from last nights event, hoping to get some more today. Will be a ripper of a change if it comes through this arovo. Bright and sunny now in the CBD would not have tipped that from last night.

Re: Victoria: Cold Outbreak. Series of Strong Cold Fronts. August 23rd - 28th 2009
The BOM should predict Isolated showers more often UKMet/GFS and JMA nailed this nicely EC come onboard the 11th hour up until Sunday it only had 3mm across Melbourne for Monday afternoon and evening
5mm here better than nothing considering I was saying yesterday if I get 10-15mm the next 72 hours I'll consider that as satisfactory event.
Good falls in the South West, Wimmera, parts of the Lower North, far South Mallee, North central especially the hills and NW slopes NW of Melbourne (Macedon and etc) and an area SE and East of Melbourne extending into West and South Gippsland and strezlekki ranges, not often you see Latrobe Valley with 27mm from one front. 30mm around Noojee but only 8mm at Thomson dam? Hmm strange anyhow some good falls about and hopefully a nice top up tonight in some areas. Another front will scoot through Bass straight tomorrow which may temporaily increase the showers in the far south and along the coast then weather will stabilise before a some more possible statewide rain Friday and Saturday.

Re: Victoria: Cold Outbreak. Series of Strong Cold Fronts. August 23rd - 28th 2009
This is brilliant - keep it coming! The more rain we can get in the dams (not just the catchments but our own dams) the better before the punishing summer sets in! Elders is saying on it's 12 months forecast that September is going to be well below average - hope they are wrong.
Re: Victoria: Cold Outbreak. Series of Strong Cold Fronts. August 23rd - 28th 2009
14mm for Lake Eildon. A bit more for Brumby to syphon off!!
Re: Victoria: Cold Outbreak. Series of Strong Cold Fronts. August 23rd - 28th 2009
The gauge had 21.2mm of rain in the 24 to 9am this morning. The land around us I think is too saturated to get more rainfall, there is flooding everywhere this morning! There were reports from dad that last night hail was 30cm thick, built up, the velocity of the showers revealed... I like the rain though, so I do not want it to stop.
Showers building in the southwest now, should continue to increase with possible thunderstorms this afternoon, chance of them becoming severe if they develop.

Exactly Powerstorm - I don't want it to stop either after what we have been through over the years. The more we can build up the water table the better. I want winters of old where you'd get bogged in the paddocks!
Re: Victoria: Cold Outbreak. Series of Strong Cold Fronts. August 23rd - 28th 2009
Looks like a ripper of a squall line approaching with the front on the Vis Sat Pic so it will be very interesting to watch the Mt Gambier radar over the next couple of hours to see how this is all going to pan out!
i agree with you Jake, that there's a decent chance of some severe action with some of these later on this afternoon (earlier for you).
Cloud has steadily started to increase over the last hour here in Broadmeadows too.. even though a few more hours of steady sunshine would be nice before the action starts.
