Re: Victoria: Low for the Queens Birthday Long Weekend 2009
Here in Ferny Creek seemed to be getting a lot of sleet last night. This morning it was around on the ground and drizzling a lot so doubt if we saw much snow here when I was asleep between 2-7am although when the sleet piles up on the ground it looks like snow. Wasn't as good as last July when we actually had quite a bit of snow

Fantastic rainfall through Melbourne, even though its only about 6mm, and great news John. Hopefully more to come for the rest of the year.
Re: Victoria: Low for the Queens Birthday Long Weekend 2009
Showers tilting back through to the eastern suburbs which is not what I expected however, 2-3mm still possible over the cental and eastern suburbs overnight.
Boy it is chilly!!!

Re: Victoria: Low for the Queens Birthday Long Weekend 2009
LAPS has the 900hPa flow going SW overnight which with warm air advection should set up some good drizzly showers happening through the eastern burbs. These often align in streets and it wouldn't surprise me to see locally 5-10mm overnight in the eastern burbs. Picking totals in the events is really tricky.... a few degrees change in the wind can mean the difference between 0mm in the Dandenongs and 15mm.
Re: Victoria: Low for the Queens Birthday Long Weekend 2009
Picked up a fairly heavy shower just then. 2.8mm in it bumping me to 6.8mm all of a sudden. Back to fine now but very cold.

Drizzly showers came in overnight but look to be clearing now.
Some impressive event totals in the end - great to see.
Looks like ~40-70mm across the Dandenongs (peak fall I've heard is ~75mm near the Basin)
~107mm at Wilsons Prom., 97mm at Port Fairy, Mt Buller ~86mm, ~18mm in Melbourne CBD. Anticipate some large under reads in the sub-alpine area where gauges don't have heaters (so freeze over and snow blows out) and in the alpine regions where lots of snow gets blown out of the gauge even with a heater.

Good on ya John
Another 4mm to 9am here with showers last night, generally un-expected from me, regarding how heavy they were. Another cold day with temperatures getting to about 13 degrees. Weekend looks interesting for the western parts of Victoria mostly, then an interesting little disturbance sitting right over me and the Otways on Tuesday, looking at GFS.

44mm all up here which was a great effort, amazing we struggled to get storms thru the summer then on Monday and Tuesday night we get them with ease...

Finally got the wife to check the gauge - a tentative event total for us of 56mm (from Sat-Thur). Best fall in a long while. With a lot of hail and sleet there will be an unread, so real total could be 60-70mm. Hoping to follow up with 20-30mm this coming weekend (perhaps I'm dreaming ).
Also Max today of just 6.8C which is getting very chilly for June - though not a record.

Back in the frigid state (after spending the week in Sydney)..
The flight back was spectacular with very extensive snow cover across the Snowies, Bogong Plains etc, widespread stratus/fog in the lee of the ranges on the Monaro plains and near Canberra. Also very widespread snow through Victoria's Yarra Ranges. Mt St Leonard had a full cover (for example) down to about 700-800m.
Has been a very cold few days at Ferny Creek - our max's for the week have been 9.1, 7.2, 5.6, 7.2 and 6.7C. It is certainly one of the cold spells I can remember - the 5.6C seems to be the 3rd coldest day since 2001 up here in Ferny Creek from a quick scan of my records.

Re: Victoria: Low for the Queens Birthday Long Weekend 2009
Welcome back Hillybilly Yes it's been absolutely freezing here in Ferny Creek this week. My old outside thermometer said -1 one morning but that could be wrong. I've been here 24 years and it reminded me of how it used to be back then. I never used to have to water the garden and it was so cold up here I used to rug up. Those heavy warm clothes I used to wear years ago are a thing of the past.
