Victoria: Rain and Thunderstorm event - August 28th to 31st 2009

Well by the radar, the rainband is dying off to the north and is shifting focus to the NW of here. Bit concerning really was wanting to see this stuff keep it's intensity and develop further

I think the upgrade in rainfall conditions are due to winds going more SWly behind the front as opposed to the Wly it was initially progging.

I think we could get quite a few showers before midnight.

Much storm potential in the cloud development Jane on sunset??

There was some convective potential (to the west of the Calder, south of the ranges, around 6pm)...also virga from a mid level line and to the NE near Macedon, a fairly strong mid level inversion. There's distant lightning on Radio531 atm.

Stop getting my hopes up guys!!!! i think regardless of whats happening now, it is showing good potential for anything after 3am.

I think we may have to wait a little while but could be a fab producer rain wise. Upper trough and cold front could spark a bit of weather up tomorrow!!!

Time to dust off the camera??

It was quite unstable today across the state, particularly down here, where we had some wonderful Cu development this afternoon ,and it kept growing too. Not until about 6pm we got our first convective shower however there was heaps of convection around, and to my suprise, managed to see one cg and one cc strike to my SE this evening. Also, we had 6mm to 9am this morning.

I will have a forecast coming up shortly...

I think once again Mildura will be a for a possible show tonight. I am seriously thinking in the coming season that i will be heading up that way... such a great breeding ground up there.

Tonight:
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms possible, mostly western and southern regions. Rain areas and isolated thunderstorms extending over the northwest shortly, and then spreading to remaining western and northern areas overnight, as well as for central locations.

Saturday: Rain areas and isolated thunderstorms, with locally heavy falls, gradually contracting eastwards. Scattered showers to follow developing in the southwest during the day with local thunderstorms; hail developing at night, then extending to most areas. Fresh to strong southwesterly winds developing from the west later, but moderate to fresh northerly winds at first.

What's happened to all the rain on the NW border - seems to have disappeared on the radar!

By the way, does anyone know who the on-duty senior meteorologist will be on Monday morning?

I am back.

The radar over the NW is on windfinding and means it is not working for the next 90 minutes and the SW too.

Rain coming into the western ranges now and developing the first proper band. A bit of rain here presently amounting to about 0.4mm so far. Quite big drops but that is about all.

Storms firing back through SA.

Tomorrow with the frontal system passing later, we could see another band of rain with isolated thunderstorms present over southern and mountain areas later. Showers to follow tomorrow night will be more extensive in E Central regions.

Back in Sale today-not a lot to report from out this way although it did get quite warm. Had messy Cu scudding through from the NW for most of the arvo-radar seems to be reading a bit of virga around west gippsland at the moment.

Still a few hours to wait for the rain band by the looks of things-going through the obs the "real" rain has only really just entered the NW of the state with the only significant totals beginning to accumulate at Mildura, Hopetoun and Horsham. SatPic does look very favourable for the state though. The continued development of thunderstorms behind the pre-frontal rain band in SA is also very encouraging for Vic as this will form the basis of where most of our rain will come from overnight and tomorrow as it flattens out into rain areas.

Very mild here in Yea which is a good sign for rain. Need my dams full before the summer so hoping this one delivers.

Nice light rain here for the last 10 mins and drizzly showers for about 30 mins before that. Getting the odd large drop in this stuff too so hopefully this may still be developing.
